How can I disable the Auto Update feature?
In the past I clicked the version and it showed me a link to the change logs and download page.
I’m on 5.3.1 and it told me 5.3.2 is available. But when I clicked on that version EE automatically updated to that version. This is just horrible. It caused a big mess on my test installation overwriting files that I customized, basically reverting the member profile settings back to default as well. No confirmation if I wanted to update, nothing. I clicked the version and it did everything automatically.
This is just wrong. EE should not update with one click by mistake from someone on the admin CP. There should a confirmation dialog first and only proceed with such action after a proper confirmation by the user, because after updating my staging install I also need to do the production and it takes time to merge changes. I would actually prefer to completely disable auto updates and just see the change log.
I had to recover from backups to fix this. I had never the intention to update, it never bothered to ask before doing this. Since the version icon is on the footer in the admin side, it is easy to click it by mistake. This is a bad UI design. Sensitive actions should be confirmed by the user.
But I don’t want to turn the version check off, just the option to auto update when I click it.
In the past, clicking the version just displayed the latest available version and a link to the change log page. I still want the software to notify when a new update is available just not auto update when I click the button, this was the default behavior in the past. I update manually but I usually check the change log page first to see if it’s a security update or its fixing something that applies to my scenario.
My previous comment still stands. Clicking that new version should not auto update the software automatically without user confirmation. I clicked that expecting to see what version was available, not to automatically update the software without my interaction.
Hope that makes sense.
I haven’t seen that at all, I click the version number at the bottom of the CP screen, that launches a popup with my current version + version to update to, and there’s an “Upgrade” button to click to start the upgrade process.
Saying that it’s very easy to click the Upgrade button by mistake as it almost covers the version number in the popup, I have noticed that before.
So yes I think there is a UI improvement to be made here.
Hi Nibb,
Thanks for mentioning this. I haven’t seen or heard of this happening before either. Traditionally we see the popup Rob has mentioned.
On the UI / UX end of things, I went ahead and opened a ticket for this and started a conversation around it internally.
