A momentous event in ExpressionEngine’s history has occurred. We just shipped Version 5, the first release as Free Open-Source Software!
A major version change gives a clean break and adds clarity for all users of what license they are running. This version removes licensing and Core feature restrictions, and has no impact on third-party add-ons.†
ExpressionEngine development is taking place in public on GitHub, and licensed under a true open-source license: the permissive Apache 2.0 Software License. We are thrilled at what this means for for the vast markets that must use open-source solutions. Earlier today, Rick Ellis explained how we came to this decision, and what it means for our future.
We’ve got a lot more to share in the coming days, but suffice it to say, we are pumped! We’ve changed who we are as a company overnight and the adrenaline is coursing! Make sure you check out our new first-party support options and high-end services that are now available. Companies that want to get involved as ExpressionEngine’s service providers can become partners in our ecosystem.
As always, this means the previous major version is now legacy software. Version 4, we barely got to know you. v4’s end of life is scheduled for November 16, 2019, and will now only receive security updates.
Lastly, ExpressionEngine has its own new account on Twitter, so make sure you follow @eecms!
† Due to this being a major version change all EEHarbor add-ons will need to be upgraded before upgrading ExpressionEngine to ensure a smooth upgrade process.
