I’m happy to announce that the ExpressionEngine Wiki module is now compatible with ExpressionEngine version 3 and is available for download on Github.
The Wiki module is being released under an Open Source license, meaning it’s free as in speech.
What to do with the Wiki posed an interesting question for us when it came time to release ExpressionEngine 3. The Wiki has been feature complete for quite some time (the last change was a small bug fix almost two years ago) and we had no plans to add new functionality. But it is also still popular, both as a public wiki and used as private wikis for internal documentation.
Clearly we wanted to update the Wiki to run on ExpressionEngine 3, but we wanted something more than that. We needed an option that would allow the Wiki to grow and change if the desire is there, even as the focus of our development shifts to adding new capabilities with wider ranging consequences.
Updating the Wiki to version 3 compatibility and releasing it under an Open Source license provides our community with the best of both worlds. For the folks who rely on the Wiki now, your update path to ExpressionEngine 3 is free and clear (see what I did there, Seth). And users who want to add new capabilities or submit bug fixes have a way to do so. We’ll be happy to look at pull requests.
And before you ask- yep, it’s free as in beer too. But you do need ExpressionEngine for the Wiki to work!
