$TMPL->log_item doesn't work

I’m troubleshooting a plugin and am trying to log to the Template Log. I do something like:

$TMPL->log_item(“Hello world”);

I have Template logging display turned on in the EE control panel and I get full template logging output, but nothing I put in there through my plugin actually displays.

This is pretty frustrating.

Are you sure the code there is executing? Try an

exit('hello!');

just above your log_item() call.
