Hi, I’m asking if anyone could point me to commercially supported - or free - EE templates for news sites, something along the lines of Worldcrunch.com.

ExpressionEngine engine doesn’t require templates/themes in the way WP does. You can take any HTML template and adapt it to EE. So you can find any basic template you like and use it by replacing the parts you want for dynamic content with the appropriate EE tags.
