Do I still need Low Variables?

I haven’t been using EE since 2.x; am building a website for a client and we want to allow the client to edit layout contents like “about us” text.

Am wondering if Low Variables is still relevant in EE 4.x world.

I know this can be done by Craft CMS out of the box.

Could you elaborate a little more on your use case? For example some things people would have used Low Variables for, could be done with a native Fluid field now. Particularly in terms of layout options the user controls etc.

Hi @Jeremy S., thanks for replying.

Back in the days, EE is primarily used to enable users to post news/ blog/ articles but for managing single-use or ‘static‘ items (for lack of better word), we’d use Low Variables. For example, contents on About Us page, (1) team photo [file input], (2) team biography [textarea], (3) contact information [Pixel & Tonic’s matrix field].

Since Low Variables has a rather friendly ui, it’s more friendly for general users to manage.

My question is, is there a way to define custom fields for ‘static’ pages in EE 4.x without the need of Low Variables?

Yes, just create a channel for your one-off page with the fields it needs, set an entry-limit if applicable (for example, only allow 1 entry in the “About” channel), and then modify the publish layout to your hearts desire. Editing these “pages” is as simple as editing any other content in this way, and you do not need any add-ons. It’s also future-proof because the content will be stored in channel entries, giving you the flexibility as a developer to re-use it or repurpose it.
