Auto update to EE5 failed, cannot rollback

How Do I?

Hi all,

Just tried to run the auto-updater to go from v4.3.1 to v5.0.1 and it failed almost instantly. Clicked the rollback link, that failed too.

Checked the EE documenation site about this and it says to navigate to /system/user/cache/ee_update/ to find the backups to restore from and, in the case the backups aren’t there, the logs to see what went wrong. https://docs.expressionengine.com/v4/installation/update.html

Problem is, that folder doesn’t exist on my server anywhere so now I can’t restore from EE’s backup, I can’t see any logs, and I can’t access my control panel at all anymore.

Checking the file /system/user/cache/current_version, says lastest_version 5.0.1.

What should I do? How can I get access to my website again? Should I try doing the update manually? Can I download the system files for v4.3.1 and manually restore them?

Cheers for any help in advance! James

Same problem here!

So it’s not a random problem.

Spoke to EllisLab direct and they were really helpful with their response. I’ll paste it here so you can see it but basically, what I did was:

  • download EE 4.3.6, replace my site’s /system/ee and /themes/ee folders with the copies from 4.3.6. This let me log back into the CP but I had a message along the top saying my version number was inconsistent.
  • update my EE Harbor plugins.
  • downloaded a copy of EE 5.0.1 and replaced my /system/ee and /themes/ee folders again with the 5.0.1 copies.

Logged back in and everything seems to working again as before with no error messages about version numbers and EE saying at the bottom that I was on 5.0.1 so think it’s all good!

If you’re going to try this as well, remember to backup your currently /system/ee and /themes/ee folders and database, just in case it doesn’t work for you!

EllisLab response: If you have any EEHarbor add-ons, they need to be update preferably before upgrading EE to v5. Otherwise, the upgrade is actually completing successfully and wiping the cache, but before it can send you to the login page, there’s an error.

Check for EEHarbor addons, see if dropping the fresh files in fixes it.

If not- there were no database changes going from v4-v5 so all you need to do to roll back is replace the system/ee and theme/ee with fresh v4 files, update your addons, then run the 1-click again.

It was just a matter of some add-on version checks not being ready to run into a ‘v5’ version and thus causing issues. They’ve got them all updated, so should be a quick fix.
