Issues with RTE fields

I am running into an issue where the RTE fields are stripping both ‘br’ and ‘p’ tags from content. For example, if I save a rte field with a ‘br’ tag between content, it will replace it with a ‘br’ tag surrounded by ‘p’ tags. If I open the same entry and save again without making any changes the ‘br’ tag is then stripped from the ‘p’ tags. If I open and save the entry again the remaining ‘p’ tags get removed.

It almost seems like the RTE field is randomly removing tags when saving the entry, which isn’t reliable. Any ideas why this is happening?

Are you adding in html to the field? If so, the RTE just may not be a good choice. Or is it you’re making two hard returns, everything looks fine, but after saving, you’ve lost the extra line break?

Well I’ve tried it both ways. We had been adding content to the RTE field by copying html into the “view code” section of the RTE field. When doing it that way the field seems to strip any top level ‘br’ tags. I also tried recreating the content by just using the RTE field, but it still seems to be stripping top level returns between paragraphs.
