MSM and Shared Members

How Do I?

I’m using the MSM for the first time. I have an existing EE site with a few thousand members BUT I need to setup a new site with a new domain (and no members) as the primary domain and then make my existing site (with members) and another new domain to be add-on sites to the new primary domain. Like this:

  • New Primary Domain
    • New add-on domain
    • Existing site with members

I’ve already setup the primary domain and the new add-on domain to work with MSM and it’s all great. I’m not sure how to roll the existing domain into this model and be able to share members between the three. I’m assuming I need to export the members out of the existing domain and import them into the new primary domain???? Any advise or help would be appreciated.

Well- good news. With MSM, members are already shared. You can set different member group permissions for each site, but there’s only 1 member record across all sites.

Does that help? Everyone in ‘Existing site with members’ is already a member of the new MSM sites. And they only have 1 user group, that’s universal across sites as well. But like I say- the member group permissions, those can vary for each site.

It’s one of the key issues to consider when deciding to go with MSM or standalone installs. Sometimes you want the members shared and sometimes you don’t.
