Countdown Error

Just installed the countdown plugin and when trying the example get the following error:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_VARIABLE in /home/accstud/public_html/cms/cms/plugins/pi.countdown.php on line 1

which refers to <?php

Anyone any ideas as it must be something obvious?

Running 1.5.2
