help me to develop my first extension

i want to develop my 1st extension, but i want to get some help to get started. I want to add extra fields (getting form db) under the user avatar in the forum threads.

the coding of getting the right information with sql, i can do, but i want to know how to start develop a extension, and how i know which hook i must have.

can you help me?
