Is there a date plugin

Im trying to get the current date. Basically looking for something similar to the nice_date plugin without having to specify a date ( http://expressionengine.com/downloads/details/nice_date/ )
I know this can be done with the date standard variable. However, this is only possible if you place this in the weblog:entries tag.

Ok i found out this is possible with current_time.
{current_time format="%M"}
