Just installed this on version 1.6.1 and it’s working brilliantly.
One question though. After installing the Akismet Extension, when I log into my control panel and I see the “site statistics” on the control panel homepage I see at the bottom it says “comments awaiting moderation.” If I click this link it takes me to the comments that Akismet thinks is spam. On this page I have all the comments automatically marked as “closed.” I have the choice to either delete them or open them. If am to delete them from this page, is that also helping Akismet “learn” in the process? Or…to help Akismet “learn” do I actually have to click on “Modules >> Akismet” and then select all and “Mark as Spam and Delete?”
One location it simply has the option to delete and the other location has the option to mark as spam plus delete…didn’t know if those two were the same?

They’re not. The former is the EE-native way of moderating comments, the latter is the Akismet way. If you delete comments via Modules > Akismet, then it will learn. Otherwise it will not.
Hello everybody (:
I am thinking about installing this extension, but I want to make sure that version 1.1 - 2006.12.08 is the latest and that it is compatible with ExpressionEngine v 1.6.1.
From what I have read it seems pretty stable but the date of that latest version posted at this page gives me some anxiety.
I am guessing that I need to have Wordpress installed in order to get the API key?
cheers (:

Hello hereward,
I think it’s safe to install, working quite good for 1 year now. Although it’s getting really slow -and affects the resources of my server- when it has to deal with many spam messages [deletion, i’m getting low response when leave the plugin to “catch” more than 200 comments]
You should follow the post of CrimsonDawn [link] for generic spam fight.
PS: You just need to register for a blog @ wordpress dot com to get an API key, nothing more. No installs 😊

Just because there hasn’t been an update since December 2006, doesn’t mean this add-on is out of date. What it does is very straight-forward, so there was no need for extra options or updates. And since EE’s API nor Akismet’s API changed, no alterations or new versions were needed for this add-on to work properly.
In short: safe to install. 😊
I have a question about commerical licensing which i have also sent to akismet but have not received a reply.
I am administering a commerical site and we are looking for a final solution for spam. The akismet module works great but I am not sure about the terms and conditions of using the module.
Since the module requires a wordpress API key this gives us reason to think that there may be licensing issues using it on a commerical portal.
Any feedback you can give is appreciated.
(: Hereward
Should this be working with 1.6.3? I have installed as per instructions. I get no errors, but I also cannot enable the extension in
Admin > Utilities > Extensions Manager
After clicking [Enable extensions?] green button and confirming status of Akismet Check (1.1) still stays disabled. No errors, no nothing. It just wont enable.
I’m wondering if this extension still works with the latest version of EE? (1.6.7)
It does. And quite a lot of people use it.
