Ruby on Rails has a plugin called “Faker”, which generates fake data for testing a web application. For example, if you have a customers table in your DB, it will fill it with fictitious entries.

As I work on larger EE projects, I find myself making a lot of fake entries for events, articles, staff, etc. It’s hard to plan the layout of pages unless there is substantial data to fill them.

It would be nice to have an extension that populates weblogs with fake data, and randomizes custom field choices. It would have some options in the CP:

  • Choose weblog
  • Choose # of entries
  • Choose status
  • Randomize date range between xx/xx/xxxx and xx/xx/xxxx
  • Include text “TEST” in titles?

etc.

And then it would run and generate the entries.

Cheers,

Ben

Giving this a thought, as soon as I have some spare time, I might give this a go.
