Question about target sizes in image gallery

This is more of a how to/ configuration question, but it applies to this module; I hope someone can help. It must be something obvious I am missing;
Currently when you set the target sizes for thumbnails and medium images in the gallery module the height is maintained while the width can be whatever the aspect ratio demands. If nothing else I’m looking to reverse the order: width fixed.
But I do not see why such an advanced gallery module would not have the “resize unti it falls into the specifed size” option, which I would prefer here.
Or even a “resize to the specified size and then crop the larger size”.
But I’ll settle for just a resize to fit in the specified area. Don’t tell me it doesn’t exist? Or should I just not use the image gallery to generate thumbnails etc?
Since the Gallery is a first party module, Tech Support would have been the proper forum, I think…
You are not missing something obvious, but the functionality that you want is included, just not publically configurable - for whatever reason.
