Markdown Extra not using MD syntax for anchors

I’m using EE 1.65. Recently I implemented Markdown for the standard entry fields. The Markdown (and Markdown Extra) plugins seem to require that the URL in an a anchor be surrounded by quotes: link. But the standard Markdown syntax has quotes around only the (optional) title for the link.

Is anyone else seeing this behavior? Or have I missed some configuration?
