Paid subscription add-on suggestions?

I’m looking for an add-on that provides the following functionalities: - paid subscriptions with time constraints e.g. 3 month membership, 12 month membership - download purchase (nice-to-have) - product purchase (e.g. book) - works directly with payment gateway (so no foxycart-style man-in-the-middle stuff)
FoxEE seems to fit the description (http://www.hccdevelopment.com/Web-Based-Software/Product/foxee/), but it relies on FoxyCart which I don’t find very convincing: very slow server (which in turn slows down my own website), no phone number or physical address listed, inaccessible support forum (their captcha says I can’t read), they don’t answer emails…
I’ve discovered all of this AFTER I purchased FoxEE…. grrr :o).
So good people of EE forum, do you have any suggestions?
You might want to check out amember. It integrates, to a degree, with Expression Engine. I’ve used it - I don’t love it and if you search the forums here you’ll see some of the issues, but it is geared toward paid subscriptions and making parts of your sites - a download area, for instance - only available to current members.

And for anyone else out there - why hasn’t someone made this sort of functionality as an Expression Engine module yet?
How about using simple commerce? You can have user moved from member group A to B after the purchase has been made through paypal. (eg. item = “3months”) I don’t know if there is a way (currently) to record date/time when the purchase was made…I suppose if you get this going then you can use simple condition and compare current date with the purchase date… ‘if purchase_date + 90 days > today_date then no access’

But yeah…’commerce’ side of things in EE is still shaky…well, you know ‘shopping cart’ is a beast on its own.

Haven’t tried it out.
Do any of these programs do automatic renewals?
