Well, there shouldn’t be any need to be afraid.
I don’t see what’s wrong with Simple Tags and I know that updating your EE will fix the problem. I cannot afford to support such an outdated EE build.
If you’re lucky, it works if you just rename the file ext.simple_tags.php to ext.Simple_tags.php

EE 1.6.1 is well over a year old. There have been a dozen or more versions in between then and now. I cannot install and keep every version and create and mainttain workarounds for things that are already fixed.
Even Ellislab will tell you to update to the latest build if you encounter a bug because it’s not feasible to support a large number of different version.
There have also been several security fixes since 1.6.1, so an update is highly adviseable.
Upgrading is really easy so long as you follow the step by step instructions. Each ‘task’ if you will doesn’t require any special skill, and after you’ve done it a few times you’ll gain some confidence. Make sure to post in the technical support forums if you’re unsure about a particular step - it’s perfectly fine to stop and ask for confirmation, but our staff cannot perform the upgrade for you. If you aren’t comfortable with using FTP and performing backups, you may certainly use the Job Board and hire an experienced community member to upgrade your site for you.
