Create new members via API

Is there a way to create a new member account via code? I want to use Facebook Connect to create it. I know it’s doable via SQL inserts but I want the code to be independent of the database structure since that can change.
I know the Fab-EE folks have been working on Facebook Connect but it’s been four months with nothing to show, so I’m going on my own.
Any ideas?

I just hoping someone can release a proper facebook connect extension soon 😊
