Is there an API for logging?

Hi

I’m working on a module for media delivery. I am making good progresses but I find that I need to log access to media. For a variety of reasons, I don’t want to store the log in a database but would prefer to use good old-fashioned text log files. I have looked through the API and I can’t find a logging API. Nor do I see any log in EE which probably explains the lack of API.

My question is the following: did I missed the API call or can I safely assume that EE does not provide a file-based logging API and just use any third-party logging system?
