dabbledoo/design has been hard at work developing a new User Groups Module for ExpressionEngine. The UG Module allows admins and/or users of your site to create, manage, and join User Groups. The Module is intended to provide similar functionality to the Groups we all know and love on Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, etc.
Anyone interested in giving a new User Groups Module a try? It is designed to add a bit of social functionality to EE and your online community. We will offer up free copies to individuals willing to do some beta testing. If interested please send us a PM with: 1) Your Name 2) Your email address 3) Your website/URL 4) How you envision leveraging the User Groups module with your site’s feature sets 5) Other modules you currently use
We will keep this testing to a small group - probably 5-10 depending on the interest.
Once we get past the initial testing, we we will update those that have commented on this thread with release details and a link to the documentation so you can get a feeling for what you can accomplish with User Groups. So that means if you’re interested in this module, please comment on this thread so we can keep you in the loop.
Side note: If you’re asking yourself - why wouldn’t I just use EE’s built-in Member Groups Module, the answer is simple. Member Groups are not intended to be social groups like User Groups are. Member Groups are centered around permissions, while User Groups are centered around collaboration with like-minded people.
Hey Mark and Todd -
Your PM came through – sorry it took me a bit to get back to you.
Mark - Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it since you know a bit or two about writing add-ons 😊
(FYI Todd - you need to click that checkbox when replying to PMs to save it in your inbox)
Thanks,
Doug

Yep definitely just a bit at the moment. Seem to be stuck on plugins and extensions at the moment. No modules to speak of yet but I’m working on it 😉
Looking forward to testing this one out though.
Best wishes,
Mark
I’m defitely interested in learning more about this module.
I just recieved a request for a forum customization that would involve users being able to join a group within the forum on their own but be assigned to the group by an admin - would this module be able to do this?
also would it be extendable to include forum subscriptions per group - i.e. members in a group would be subscribed to an entire forum (not a thread) and recieve emails and/or digests of all posts to that forum?

Hi Sean – I think what you’re asking is “can users join a group on their own”. The answer to that is yes. All users need to do to join a group is click the Join button you provide for the and they’re in.

The way the module behaves right now is users can subscribe to a group’s forum and receive an email whenever a new thread is posted. Then, if they’re interested in a thread, they can go and subscribe to that thread.
You should also be able to set up an RSS feed for all threads or individual threads similar to how you would do that for the weblogs module (just make an RSS template and use the tags accordingly).
I like the idea of a digest option, so we’ll look into adding that in the future – not sure if that will make it in to the first version though.
Hopefully this answers your questions. Let us know if you have any others.
Thanks!

We are finishing up documentation now and hope to send the beta to developers later this week. Once we get some initial feedback we will update this thread and let you know where you can go to check it out. We may or may not do a ‘public’ beta, it really depends on the feedback we get from the closed beta.
Thanks for the interest, we can’t wait to release it!
Adam
