Solspace is about to release a really great module called SuperSearch, too – it’s currently in beta. More full-featured.
You beat me to it, was just going to mention it. I’ve been beta testing this module for a few weeks now and it really is fantastic. You can build your search form however you see fit and then do all kinds of searches using it such as from and to values, exact values, relevance based searches etc…
Definitely one to watch out for when it’s released publicly. Solspace have put a lot of work into that one.
Best wishes,
Mark
My apologies for the long absence, I wasn’t receiving notifications for this thread and the project has gone cold.
Back in the summer, Factory Interactive was going to re-purpose some custom search code we’d written for a client and base a search module on it.
When we were several hours into the module’s development, we realized that our approach was flawed. We felt that it was fine to empower users to build queries that searched custom channel fields, but we realized that therein lied our module’s weakness too – users would have to build each query.
We talked to Solspace around that time about something they were putting together, perhaps the SuperSearch module which has been mentioned here, and with that we backed off our own development efforts given that we felt the solution we would provide wouldn’t be totally adequate.
We’re looking into the integration of open-source platforms that offer much more comprehensive indexing solutions such as Solr. We think that fuller indexing of sites is a far better option for search than we were proposing. Grist.org has a great example of integrating the Solr platform should you want to see it in action.
At any rate, Solspace has always produced great software, and they’ve likely solved some of the issues that we were facing, so we’re as excited about their pending release as anyone.
Hey guys - we’ve already successfully created a rich EE search and indexing engine using Lucene to come up with a powerful search module that outputs indexed and relevant search results (even across applications such as x-cart as well as EE weblogs, forums, etc.). Is there still interest in this?
You might want to give Laisvunas’s Yahoo! BOSS plugin a shot:

I’m trying to address some issues with it pulling results from a newly launched site but it does seem promising.
