Trying to Build: Custom Pagination Extension

I’d like to customize the output of pagination and don’t really have a good idea of where to start. I know that there are other extensions out there, but I wanted to give it a shot first, before going with an already made extension. I’ve looked into hooks and weblog_module_create_pagination seems to be what I need, but I’m not sure where to go.

I think I understand the update, add and delete methods, I guess I’m unsure of what to do in order to change the pagination. I’ve looked through the extension that does what I want (http://michaelbystrom.com/download/ee/) but I’m not understanding the majority of the code.

Are there any extension tutorials out there so I can get my hands dirty?
