Noob: Overrride quick search: Tips?

Hi,

I want to write an extension that overrides the quick search form html output.

Just wondering if there is an extension template floating around?

Also, I am a bit worried about messing-up my database… Should I install a new EE just for dev work?

Any tips on creating an override extension?
