How to add items to CP Member Profile sidebar?

So, in the past, when I needed to add an item to the sidebar for a member profile, I used the hook ‘myaccount_nav_setup’. However, that hook has disappeared in EE3.1. So, how are we supposed to add a new item to the sidebar? I assume it makes use of the “CP/Sidebar” service, but can’t quite figure out how to use it. Any help?
Since there are no answers, am I to assume that it is no longer possible to add an item to the CP profile sidebar?
From looking at ee/EllisLab/ExpressionEngine/Controller/Members/Profile/Profile.php, it looks like the sidebar is now hardcoded and can not be changed without editing a core file. Is this the case? If so, that stinks. Also, the documentation for the hooks needs to be updated to remove mention of the ‘myaccount_nav_setup’ hook, which doesn’t exist any more.
