Im sorry if this is in the wrong place but I couldnt find anywhere else to ask. My site digital-watch.com has been happily running for 6 years maybe longer. I just went to upload some images to one of my pages and it tells me the upload path is wrong. I havent changed the upload path and I have confirmed with my host that the upload path is correct. I have also tried uploading images to other areas of the site and different upload paths and they say the same. I have also reinstalled EE on the server. I cant think of anything else I can do. I have another site running EE and that is fine. Is there anything else I can do? The site is really important for its community of collectors and without repair I cant upload any more watches.

many thanks in advance for any help

Adam

Hi Adam,

If the upload path is correct, have you

  • checked file and folder permissions (CHMOD)
  • changed your .htaccess file
  • changed the configuration of your server?

Regards,

e.

Thank you for responding e.b.

I havent changed anything. I have another site running using exactly the same system and that works fine. I’ve checked the htaccess file and the CHMOD. I’ve asked the hosts and they say that the path I have is correct, thats why I am at a loss, I just couldnt think of anything else to check. What do I need to check on the server configuration? Especially as a replica site works perfectly?

again thanks for the help, it really is appreciated.

regards

Adam

Wow, that’s tricky, Adam.

Another idea: Have you checked if PHP file upload size is big enough for the images you want to upload? (I think, error message then is saying sth. like “exceeds allowed file size” but it doesn’t hurt to check.)

How about diving into your database and verify if the path is correct in there?

I don’t remember if synchronizing folders was already in EE 1.6.8. If so, have you tried uploading the new images to your image folder and then synchronize? Depending on whether this works or not it’ll take you further in finding the cause of your problem.

What do I need to check on the server configuration?

If you’re running your own server there are plenty of options why paths can be altered or why writing the correct path is impossible. Did you have an update or did your provider perform some maintenance works?

I have another site running using exactly the same system and that works fine.

Does this mean, the other site is running on EE 1.6.8 too or are they both on the same server/webspace?

Regards,

e.b.

eb

sorry for the late reply I have been away. The other site is identical. How do I check in the database that the path is correct? Obviously I have checked in EE and that is supposedly right. Do I need to go into mysql?

Hello Adam,

Do I need to go into mysql?

Yes, open your database (phpmyadmin) and look for the table containing the paths. Since the tables are named after their purpose/content this shouldn’t be too difficult. I had cases before, in which the databases content differed from what was written in the CMS/EE.

Please let me/us know if you leave for a while because if you don’t reply for a few days one thinks you either solved the problem or just abandoned the thread and won’t follow up.

Thanks EB, I’ve checked the mysql and the paths are correct to the ones I have in the EE control panel. I’ve also tried to upload from directly inside the EE control panel and receive the same error so I now know the error isn’t in my website.

If it just suddenly broke, it could be something in the environment changed. Perhaps a PHP update? 1.6.8 is REALLY old. If it were me, I’d start by updating it to 1.7.3. If that seems a bit daunting, perhaps pull in your original developer or someone from the pro network to do it for you?

They could get the uploads working and also advise you on what it would take to update to v2 or v3. I’m always surprised when 1.6 installs are able to run without hitting PHP version issues.

Robin I built the site originally, I didnt think that it would only have a lifespan of only 6 years. I actually have another identical site vintagelcd.com thats works perfectly with no upload path errors.

I did try the 1.7 upgrade but I couldnt get the upgrade.php to work so I had to go back to 1.6.8.

I would like at some point to update the site to a newer version, but its a huge site and Im not sure it would upgrade smoothly

6 years is a significant amount of time not to maintain updates on any software. I agree with above input that if you changed nothing at all, then the hosting environment likely changed, and the issue may not be EE directly.

You never answered if the “identical” other site you have is running the exact same version of EE in the exact same hosting environment or not. Even if it’s with the same host, it doesn’t mean the environment is identical.

Also have you audited your site/server for any malicious activity? It’s also possible your server has been compromised in some way.

Sorry for the delay Jeremy. I didnt update the site to EE 2 because the site as it was built wasnt supported in EE2. Now I would build it completely differently and use the EE control panel only for uploads. Im not a professional, just learnt EE for fun.

Do you know how easy it is to take my existing 1.6.8 and upgrade to 3? Rebuilding the website to use whats available with EE now. At the time I used a lot of third part plug ins and extensions.

regards

Adam
