Set status to 'Open' in a hidden form field?

I’ve tried everything, including searching for an answer. This html doesn’t work (for non-superadmin):
<input name="status" id="status" type="hidden" value='Open'>This parameter in the channel:form tag doesn’t work:
{exp:channel:form channel="channel_name" status="Open" return="URL"}At a loss. Non-super users need to be able to see their entries. Status is being a jerk. 😊

So…
By default, no status groups are assigned to any new channels when you create them. I wasn’t aware of this. Once I went back and assigned the default status group to all of the channels necessary, I was able to force status to open on new entries by regular members…
