Unsubscribe from Mailing list

How Do I?

I’m using EE 2.10.1, and installed mailing list add-on to give visitor to the website ability to subscribe to newsletter. I made a form for them to subscribe, and everything works fine, but the only way they can unsubscribe is if they get an e-mail, that is sent thru “Communicate” in the backend itself, which then automatically includes at the end of the email an unsubscribe link. That is a problem, as the client doesn’t want to use “Communicate” in backend, but their own email to send these newsletters. I made a page for them, where they can download the list of all subscribed email thru php, so they don’t have to access EE backend, but the only thing that I can’t figure out now is how to give subscribers ability to unsubscribe, if they never get the emails thru “Communicate”.

Ideally I would like to make something resembling the subscribe form, where they get the option on website to type in the email they want to unsubscribe and unsubscribe that way. Is this possible in any way?

How can I make a template on website which would give Mailing List subscribed visitors option to unsubscribe? There are unfortunately no guides for Mailing list unsubscription code in user guide for EE, only how to set up subscribe part of the code.

When you say they want to use their own email to send the newsletters, do you mean they want to build & send through outlook or other email client?

This isn’t an EE solution, but I had a similar situation with a client one time & we ended up using one of the bulk-mailers like Constant Contact or Mail chimp… these Mailers allow you to build a Subscribe form to embed on your website. Then the subscribe & un-sub are handled through that platform. Most of them have a cost involved but when it comes to dealing with sending email newsletters & un-subscribe lists the right way, it’s pretty seamless.

I deal with bulk-mailing a lot at work, and as long as there is no need to store these lists on your site, It may be worth suggesting something like that to them.

Thanks for your replay.

Yes, that is exactly what I mean. They want to use Outlook to send these emails, which isn’t connected to the EE mailing list module, so no way of generating and including the unsubscribe code in emails.

And unfortunately another bulk mail system is not an option here. I’m aware of better funcionality of these services that specialise in that area, but they insist on using the personal Outlook email setup for sending these newsletter emails.

I understand your problem. Unfortunately, since they are sending through their own contact list & Outlook, the best you can probably do is as you suggested before - create an unsubscribe form on the site but the problem is that then it is wholely up to the client to login, check the list & then remove people from their Outlook.

One other thing I have seem before is to place an instruction at the end of the email instructing the reader: “To unsubscribe from this newsletter, reply with UNSUBSCRIBE in the subject line” - or something to that effect. In your case, this may be a better solution because it removes a couple of steps & goes straight to the clients inbox where they can’t miss it.

Unfortunately, if they insist on doing it this way, there is really only so much you can do to help them out aside from good advice & help devise the best solution you can.

Good Luck. R
