Change length of existing field and keep existing entries?

Pretty simple one. Not an EE developer but making some simple changes to an existing site. EE 2.4

Can I change the Maxlength of a custom field and retain existing data that exceeds this limit? I only need the limit to be effective for entries moving forward and keep existing data as is.
