EE3 - customise shared field group on a per channel basis

One of the great things about EE 2 (and gypsy on EE1) was the ability to create large field groups and customise them to show/hide fields for each channel. Especially useful when you have a big site with lots of variations of content within the same theme. For example I’ve built a travel site in EE and we publish to a region, each region (channel) shares the same fields but some aren’t relevant and some are. There are 50+ regions so building out a field group for each one would be hell.

Am I missing something in EE3?
