What is the maximum compatible PHP version for EE 1.7.1?

Hi,
Our website is on [EE version 1.7.1] and [PHP version 5.2.17]. Our site Host charges us for their “Extended PHP Support” service since we are using an older PHP version not supported by PHP community anymore. If we were using currently stable PHP version 5.6, we would not be charged for that.
However, we also cannot switch to the latest PHP version immediately because of being unsure if the site will still be working afterwards without any issues. That’s why, can you Folks please make us sure about which PHP version EE 1.7.1 will be compatible with at max?

Going by the dates of release, I’d say probably PHP 5.3 on the top end. It should be noted that ExpressionEngine 1 isn’t maintained any longer either, so your whole stack is out of date. I’m not surprised that the host is charging extra for that, since that means greater potential for security issues, and costlier resource usage to keep running on older software.
ExpressionEngine 2 is itself retiring at the end of the month, so your best move would be to upgrade first to v2 ($50), then take advantage of our current sale and upgrade to v3 for 50% off. Then your host can run PHP 7 and you’ll both be happy, secure, and saving money. 😊
