global_vars and "regular expression is too large" error

Yeah that was essentially the change, plus checking for globals_regex[$cache_key] and assigning to it in that method. The changes were limited to only that method if you just want to copy and paste that method.

I tested with 10,000 global vars and it added about 0.002s.
