Upgrading v2.11.9 MSM site to v3.5.6 gives white screen

I’m trying to upgrade my MSM site from v2.11.9 to v3.5.6.
The upgrade starts to run just fine, but I get a white screen after it’s completed the v3.0.5 upgrade stage.
What could be causing that problem?

Update: I have upgraded the site to 3.0.5 and am trying to debug from there.
I’ve found that the Rich Text Editor wouldn’t update, so I have uninstalled that (as it wasn’t being used anyway). But that didn’t allow me to upgrade EE beyond 3.0.5 either.
