Template route with parent and child categories

Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to set up a template route that utilizes categories as well as their child categories?

I see in the EE docs that I can get a category to work via a route like:

/shop/{cat:category}

but I also need to go one deeper and add a child of that category like:

/shop/{cat:category}/{subcat:?????}

Is this something that is able to be done?
