How to make category a required field

“I see that add-ons to make a category required support only EE2. Are there some ways to do the same with EE3?” This was posted here in November, 2017, but no one has responded. Since this is basic function there must be a way of doing it. Can someone direct me to who can answer this? Should I pay the $49 for a one-time support ticket? Thanks, Geoff

If nothing else, is there a way to automatically set the status of an entry to Closed when it is created if the ‘required’ category is not selected, possibly using a conditional?
