I just read that Expression Engine is going open source, and is now going to be free.

https://expressionengine.com/blog/expressionengine-is-now-free

Questions:

a) Is the core / paid model just going to be one free version now? b) Who is going to maintain it? If it’s still going to be EllisLab, how are they going to stay in business, and afford to maintain it?

Hi Halogen! We will have more details in November as the post mentions, but in broad strokes, yes. We are still maintaining it and will manage major version design and development. There will be a single version, fully-featured.

Hope this step does not mean “retiring”.

I do not want to be negative But I DONT feel comfortable about this move

Definitely NOT retiring. ExpressionEngine is the foundation of great things to come. A lot more will be revealed in November.

EE Team,

Can I ask if you could update the license page, to reflect the new licensing model / Open-source direction?

https://expressionengine.com/license

Kind regards,

License will be updated in November along with a product version number change, so there is a clean start rather than switching licenses mid stream. The core product requires a number of changes as well (for example, license number verification is no longer needed), which will be in place when the new license goes into effect.

At the risk of being vexatious, can I ask: Was there a new release that was supposed to be announced yesterday? Did I miss ze news?
