As soon as I heard that EE had gone open source I downloaded it and started playing around. I have followed the instructions to create a simple news site as detailed in the User Guide. But no matter what I do when I get to the point of entering text inot the field for the article text, that field does not display for me to fill. Also, at any time during the creation of this simple news site if I try to view it I will be presented with the default onboard site. In addition, during my attempts I seem to have managed to rename the default site.

I am very confused.

Did you assign fields to your Channel?

If not, go to edit your channel, click the Fields tab, then check all the fields you want to use. Save, then retry adding an entry.

Thank for the reply.

It’s getting there ! I have now got as far as ‘Render’ but am getting a 404 error page ? I am using the Chrome browser and WAMP for my localhost setup.

I have the latest version of EE, but it seems that when I download the latest user guide with the 5 option, I open it up and find that it says version 4 ? A few moments ago I tested this again and sure enough selecting the 5 option on the EE site, gives me the version 4 user guide when I open the zip file.

Update………… It looks as though some of the screen shots in the version 5 of EE User Guide, are from version 4.

That has been the confusion there.

Can I also suggest you check your Chrome cache settings? I find that it likes to hang on to cached versions of pages a little longer than I would like at times, and has confused me on a number of occassions by something appearing not to have changed when in fact it’s fine in other browsers.

Thanks for the info. I will give it a try later on and post the result.

Just been looking in EE to see if I could find a way to change the default browser, but have not found one so far. For EE, I think it might be an idea to use a different browser to my usual one, so that I can clear the cach as often as I feel like, without any inconvenience.

I have looked for a way within EE to change the default browser, and found nothing. So I have uninstalled WAMP/EE a few times and selected a different browser as the chosen default. Still no luck ? With IE as the browser the fields page would not even load. Firefox was more successful, but still the fields would not display to enter text to publish. (And yes I made sure I had ticked the box and saved) As a newbie to EE, everything has to operate exactly as specified in the user manual/howto guide. As a newbie the guide has to look exactly as the latest software, it is so easy to get lost I have been thrown a couple of times by the slight difference.

I’m a little confused as to how you think EE can select a default browser? That’s something that is within your PC/Mac settings and not controlled by EE, or WAMP for that matter?

SUCCESS !

When I made the previous post I had been going around in circles for a number of hours and was exhausted and confused about choice of browsers. It is true that it is WAMP that offers the option of a choice of browser. I was thinking in terms of Dreamweaver that allows you to change your choice of browser to view your pages during editing, without changing the default browser for your entire PC. I was looking for something the same in EE. The reason for that is as you have said Chrome can be a bit too good at ‘Caching’ pages. When you delete all your history and other bits of info you have to go back and re-enter all of the stuff that you want to keep. Having a separate browser to test EE in would allow being able to clear the cache 20 times day if need be, with no need to clear out your regular browser.

When extracting the EE file, WinZip has not helped by changing my browser to Edge for html etc and also Edge for my pdf files. The only way to change this back to my usual defaults is via the PC settings that changes everything, no matter what I might have selected for WAMP previously.

Anyway. Having cleared the cache on all 3 available browsers, 4 if you count Edge, and just set WAMP to my default, it is all OK and I have published the Basic News Site.

For any other Newbie like myself I would suggest that when installing EE and you are asked if you wish to install the default site, say no, as I find it just clutters things.

It is easy to uninstall WAMP and reinstall it all again later if need be.

Many Thanks !
