How to Setup a Site with Paid Membership?

How Do I?

Hi all! I have a client that is a not-for-profit organisation, that needs a membership site - ie., a site where the general public can sign up as official ‘members’. They have 3 different membership levels: a ‘free’ member, a ‘paying’ member, and a ‘corporate’ member (also paying). Memberships are renewed yearly, and it would be best if we could setup recurring billing.

I thought EE might be a good fit for the project, considering it has membership functionality ‘baked in’. I know that EE5 also has a ‘simple ecommerce’ module, but I suspect it probably won’t cover recurring membership payments. I was wondering whether the more experienced users can recommend an extension/plug-in that may be able to help - and which would be easy enough for the client to manage?

Any suggestions you can make in regards to how to best set this up would be extremely welcome! 😊

You’re correct, Simple commerce isn’t suited for recurring subscriptions.

Have a look at the Charge module https://eeharbor.com/charge as that’s built specifically for subscriptions. As far as the client is concerned it normally runs on auto pilot once set up, but you could easily build in something for them to manage price changes etc. The same dev’s also have the https://eeharbor.com/subscriptions module but that’s not yet updated to EE4/5.

It you need members to be able to edit their own profile something like https://eeharbor.com/user is worth considering, much easier to integrate than the native methods.

Thank you for the info, Rob! I’ll certainly have a look at these!
