Upgrading to EE4/EE5 from EE3? Two methods, two outcomes?

How Do I?

Hi all,

I’ve attempted to upgrade a couple of sites to EE4 from EE 3.5 via the instructions in the docs.

One issue and I’m wondering if anyone else has discovered this, or it is isolated to my environment and or site configuration:

Run the update wizard

Go to your site’s control panel URL (typically found at https://example.com/admin.php or https://example.com/system/) and follow the on-screen instructions to update ExpressionEngine.

When using example.com/system, the update wizard throws a warning and crashes

However, when using example.com/admin.php, the update wizard completes with no warnings (provided the plugins are up-to-date).

Has anyone encountered this before?

Regardless, is there a best practice outside of the docs you adhere to when it comes to updating the CMS?

Hi,

The screenshot looks like it might be getting caught on a third party add on called Low Variables. I would reach out to him and see if he has a workaround, typically he’s very good about providing support for his add ons directly.
