File fieldtype won't load

EE 5.3.0
When I add a file Fieldtype to an entry form it won’t load on the form.
I just get a spinning “Loading” icon that never does load.
Tried deleting and recreating but same thing. I also tried creating the field without the option to display uploaded files.
Anyone else seen this issue?
You mean in the backend control panel’s publish page?
Are you using MSM for multiple sites?
No chance the field is setup using a file directory that no longer exists or anything?
If you open your browser debugging tools and take a look at the bad response, does it tell you anything useful?
The directory is good, no MSM
Yes this is on the Publish entry form
I get the following message in the browser console

I have this issue on more than one install of EE
