Field Groups (vs) Individual Fields in Channels

How Do I?

I’m new to EE v5. I have worked mostly in EE v2 which required you to make a Field Group before you could make individual Fields. And those individual Fields could only be accessed from that Field Group. I think? 😊

I’m trying to wrap my head around what advantages are offered by creating Field Groups for individual Fields vs just selecting individual fields within a Channel? Are field groups just left over from older versions of EE?

Any help is appreciated!

I think one of the best examples of the usefulness of a field group is an SEO group. Say for search engine optimization you want to have a title, description and idk, some other obscure SEO thing that your client will love.

Make an SEO group, put all the fields in it. Then any ‘content’ type channel, you use that group, plus any other fields or field groups appropriate to that particular channel.

It’s going to depend largely on the site and what it makes sense to ‘share’ repeatedly, but it’s nice to still have the ability to group them when you want to.

That makes sense. Thank you for the clarification!
