EE2 - Hooks in member_model not being called

I’ve created a custom extension to send out an email when the member_create_end hook is fired. However this is not working.
In trying to track down the source of the problem I have some var_dump and die calls that I’ve placed inside the system/expressionengine/models/member_model.php file, however when creating a new member, the process seems to go through fine.
How could I debug this further? My knowledge of ExpressionEngine 2 is limited so I’m not sure what else could be getting called to create a new member?!

Ok, so it seems the hook I needed was member_member_register inside /modules/member/mod.member_register.php and not member_create_end. Which begs the question, when does member_create_end get called?!
