Are there any ‘How-To Guides’ on switching from a Craft 2 site to ExpressionEngine?
I sit on a committee, where their developer switched them to Craft 2 maybe 5 years ago. Unfortunately, it is poorly set-up and the group that set-up no longer supports it. I’ve been helping them add new templates, adjust code, and make minor/medium changes, but have reached my limit in terms of being able to tell what’s a restriction/limitation introduced by the original developer and their set-up versus the software.
I’m exploring what a clean install of Craft 3 might offer, as well as just moving them to ExpressionEngine 5. I’m far better at EE than Craft and still consider EE a superior product. That could just be because EE suits my development style, like Quark versus InDesign or it could be that I just don’t care or want to have to learn the ins and outs of Twig and Yii to really be able to accomplish the things I want to do. Either way, a change is necessary.
I’d love to know, if anyone has done the transition before. Are there any best practices? Things to be on the look-out for? Should I just export content to .csv files and see what happens?
Their event season starts in May, and they mostly use Craft to manage 2 large annual events, one a stand-alone event, the other a festival-like event (multi-subevents). Any help would be appreciated.
I haven’t played with Craft, but in general when moving over from another CSS I tend to think setting up the EE templates from scratch is my preference. It’s also one of my favorite things to do, so I’m biased. But you’ll get the best result that way and working from a fully functioning site makes it easier, IMO.
Then pull in the actual content with DataGrab: https://expressionengine.com/add-ons/datagrab
And I’m with you, Twig just always seems weird, though I know many folks like it. I think it reminds me of Smarty, which I also didn’t like.
