Export and Import Content for Translation

How Do I?

Hi,

We’re a translation company and a client is using EE as their CMS. They want to translate the site into multiple languages and I’d like to understand how they can export content to send to us for translation and then import the translated files once completed. Is there an import/export function and what file types does this work with XLIFF/XML?JSON etc?

I think the first thing to nail down is how they’re handling the multi-lingual aspects. Are they using seperate entries for each language- possible an MSM site for each? Or are they using the add-on Publisher, so 1 entry per language, but with language specific fields (https://boldminded.com/add-ons/publisher).

In either case, there isn’t a native import field, but if this is going to be ongoing, I’d setup an import with DataGrab (https://expressionengine.com/add-ons/datagrab). It would be easy to do with separate MSM sites/entries. With Publisher, you’d probably be editing rather than making new entries? Depends on workflow. Do they make an entry in 1 language and then later you send over the translations? Or do they all go in together (in which case, easy as long as DataGrab supports publisher- you just make new entries.

But yes, if they’re using Publisher I’d drop an email to both Publisher and DataGrab authors and see if they foresee any issues importing in translations.

Hi Robin,

Thanks for the reply. That is a great help, I think I will liaise further with the client as to how they are running their instances of EE and then discuss either the datagrab or publisher options with them.

This may help with the Publisher and Datagrab situation https://github.com/litzinger/publisher-datagrab
