Changing Domain Names for MSM sites on EE 2

How Do I?

Hi, first time posting here.

I have a MSM site still running on EE 2.5.2 (www.example.com) and 5 sites on the MSM manager that represent regional territories

trinidad.example.com jamaica.example.com barbados.example.com dutch.example.com

We now need to switch all of these sub-domains to addon domains:

example.com/trinidad example.com/barbados example.com/jamaica example.com/dutch

What’s the best way to achieve this. Can’t upgrade just yet due to external factors.

Welcome to the forums

I’m assuming each subdomain has it’s folder in the root, e.g.

  • /home/site/public_html/jamaica
  • /home/site/public_html/trinidad
  • /home/site/public_html/images
  • /home/site/public_html/system
  • /home/site/public_html/themes

If that’s the case you should normally be able to safely delete the subdomain record and the folders will stay in place (make backups before you try it).

Once that’s done you’d need to update urls/paths for each MSM site as necessary for images, MS index.php and MSM admin.php then you should be able to access at example.com/placename.

You many need to tweak your .htaccess as well depending what rules you have in there.
