Shortcodes / EE Code in Channel Fields

Hi!
Is there a way of using EE shortcodes in Channel Fields? I use Espresso quite a bit but I’ve hit upon an issue where I can’t use shortcodes in a field, which has kind of put me out a bit in this project.
I’ve googled, but I can’t seem to find anything. Is there another Field type that I can use Shortcodes in?

Well, I’ll just admit it- I don’t know what a shortcode is. Like a WP shortcode?
Can you walk me through how it works/should work a bit?
