I have two category groups assigned to my ‘article’ channel.

The only categroy that I can assign the category group Article Categories is the category name News.

If I choose anything else they wont persist. I am able to tick them but they wont save - and the corresponding data will not appear in the database.

I have tried creating new categories, but these also don’t work.

The second category group detailed categories works as expected.

Any thoughts?

Any chance you have a whole lot of fields? I’m wondering if it’s possible you’re hitting a max_input_vars limit, or something along those lines.

I’m assuming this is happening in the publish and not say a channel form or something?

Interesting. I have run into this issue before, under different circumstances. I didn’t consider it this time. I will see if I can increase this limit and see if it helps.

But no, each article has about 8 fields, and in total there are around 50 possible categoires in two category groups.

Thanks for the insight, somtimes you can’t see the woods for the trees.

Nope. Increased the limit from 1000 to 40000 via .htaccess and still having the same issue.

Have restarted apache to ensure the new configs are enabled.

phpinfo confirms this.

Just to circle back around, this one turned out to be some database corruption. Tricky one!
