MSM blank page at index and admin

Folks:
I’m trying to get MSM running.
- I have a main site and the CP and site work fine.
- I followed the EE docs exactly to create a second site.
- When I visit the index or admin pages on the second site, they are blank.
Additional details:
- The EE system folder is above root.
- Both domains are on the same server.

Turns out the second site was running an older version of PHP. Upgraded PHP on the second site and all is well.
