How Do I?
I’m quite new to Expression Engine and trying to familiarise with how things work. How do I add a featured image to my article and output it in the category page, homepage…

I think, the best thing you can do is first read these documentation. And perhaps install with the default theme. https://docs.expressionengine.com/latest/channels/entries.html
When you read the documentation what custom fields / channels / entries and categories are you must be able to do so. With the channel:entries queries you can output what you want wherever you want.

VRDL is right - check out the documentation. His suggestion to install with the default theme is a good one, too. Doing that lets you see how things work, and leverage that information to build your custom templates.
