problem with Tag Module

I’ve just installed Solspace’s Tag module and I’ve set up a preference and entered some tags but they don’t show in the cp. Are tags that were entered through a custom field supposed to show up in the cp or do they have to be entered via the tag form? I got the tags to show using the tags from field field but should these tags also be available to use with the cloud and tag:entries tags as well or do they have to have been entered through the form?
